Discover Peucang Island

An Island Escape Inside One of Java's Most Important National Parks

Peucang Island, or Pulau Peucang, lies within Ujung Kulon National Park at the western edge of Java. The island is known for its bright beaches, calm coastal scenery and tropical forest, making it one of the most accessible places to experience the national park's island environment. Visitors come for a combination of nature, wildlife, swimming, snorkeling and unhurried time by the sea. Unlike a developed resort island, Peucang remains part of a protected conservation landscape, so the experience is simple, nature-focused and closely connected to Ujung Kulon's wider ecosystem.

Understanding the island

What Makes Peucang Island Special?

The appeal of Peucang is not one single attraction. It is the combination of forest, coast, wildlife and a relatively quiet island atmosphere inside a protected national park.

Peucang Island

A Small Island With Several Different Nature Experiences

WHITE
BEACHES

Calm Beaches and Clear Coastal Scenery

Peucang is widely associated with pale sandy beaches and clear water along parts of its coastline. These quieter shores are ideal for relaxing between activities, enjoying the tropical setting and swimming when local conditions are suitable. Because the island sits within a national park, the atmosphere feels very different from a busy beach resort: the surrounding forest and conservation landscape remain an important part of the experience.

FOREST
WALKS

Tropical Forest Just Behind the Shore

Inland from the beach, Peucang supports lowland tropical forest. Short walks with a guide can reveal a very different side of the island, with large trees, shaded trails and signs of wildlife. The contrast between forest and beach is one of the reasons Peucang works well as part of a wider Ujung Kulon itinerary.

WILD
LIFE

Wildlife Around the Visitor Area

Deer, wild boar, macaques and a variety of birds may be seen around Peucang Island. Wildlife remains wild, so sightings vary from day to day and visitors should keep a respectful distance, avoid feeding animals and follow guidance from park staff or local guides. These encounters are best treated as part of the island's natural rhythm, not as guaranteed attractions.

Getting there

Reaching Peucang Island by Boat

Peucang Island is reached by sea as part of a visit to Ujung Kulon National Park. One common approach is by chartered boat or speedboat from the west coast of Banten, including Carita-area departures on suitable itineraries. A direct boat journey from Carita to the Peucang area can take roughly two to three hours in favorable conditions, although actual travel time varies with the vessel, route, weather and sea state. Other programs may travel overland first toward Sumur or another western Banten gateway before continuing by boat. Your departure point should therefore be matched to the specific tour rather than treated as fixed.

Planning your visit

A Better Visit Starts With Simple Preparation

Light clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, sandals plus comfortable walking footwear, reusable drinking water and a dry bag are useful for a Peucang trip. If snorkeling is part of your itinerary, confirm that suitable equipment is included or bring equipment you are comfortable using. Keep electronics protected from salt water and rain, and remember that mobile signal and other conveniences can be limited. Most importantly, travel with flexibility: conditions in a remote marine national park can change, and responsible operators may adjust activities for safety or conservation reasons.
